Humanity hasn't found alien life. But right now, actual spacecraft are actively hunting for it — and one Mars rover may already have found a real clue. This is a plain guide to where scientists are looking, what they've found, and how solid it actually is.

No two of these cases are at the same stage. One is a disputed rock sample stuck 140 million miles from the lab that could confirm it. One is a spacecraft still six years from arrival. One hasn't launched yet. One is a signal astronomers can't agree is even real. That's not a weakness in the story — it's what the search for life actually looks like.

A new way to detect alien life: not which molecules, but how they're arranged

A study published in Nature Astronomy by UC Riverside researchers found that living systems produce a distinctive statistical "order" among molecules — amino acids turn out more diverse and evenly distributed when made by life, while fatty acids show the opposite pattern. Applied to Mars rover data or a future Europa sample, this could give scientists a second, independent signal beyond just detecting a molecule's presence.

Cheyava Falls

A Perseverance rover sample contains chemistry NASA calls "the closest we've ever come" to a sign of ancient microbial life — but the proof may be stuck on Mars. A separate 2026 study added more weight: complex organic carbon found at the nearby Bright Angel outcrop, the most robust such detection yet in Jezero Crater. China's Tianwen-3 mission now aims to launch in 2028 and return its own Mars samples by 2031 — potentially years ahead of NASA and ESA's own delayed sample-return effort. Meanwhile, across the planet in Gale Crater, Curiosity just passed 5,000 Martian days on the surface — still hunting for its own evidence of a habitable past.

The ocean under the ice

Europa Clipper is already flying toward Jupiter's icy moon to find out if the vast ocean beneath its shell could actually support life. Modeling suggests that ocean alone may hold over twice the water in every ocean on Earth combined — Clipper's magnetometer is precise enough to help confirm it.

A drone on an alien moon

Dragonfly, a nuclear-powered rotorcraft, will fly between dozens of sites on Titan hunting for the chemical building blocks of life. In September 2026, the IAU officially named its landing zone — Ahmakiq Undae, a 500-mile dune field bordering Selk Crater, where a past impact may have created a long-lived pool of liquid water.

Every real search on this list looks for the same three kinds of clues — not spacecraft or cities, but chemistry.

Biosignatures

Chemistry life leaves behind

Molecules, minerals, or patterns that living processes tend to produce — organic carbon, specific gases, mineral textures — even though non-living chemistry can sometimes mimic them too.

Habitability

Could this place support life at all?

Liquid water, an energy source, and the right chemistry, sustained for long enough — the baseline conditions missions like Europa Clipper are built to check for.

Confirmation

Why "potential" rarely becomes "confirmed"

Remote instruments can flag a candidate signal, but ruling out every non-biological explanation usually takes years of debate — or a sample back in an Earth lab.

Detection

Why real "photos" of an exoplanet are so rare

Nearly 6,000 exoplanets are confirmed, but almost none were actually photographed — most were found indirectly, through a star's brief dimming as a planet crosses in front of it, or a tiny wobble in the star's motion. Directly imaging a planet is far harder: it sits millions of times fainter than the star right beside it. Only a few dozen exoplanets have ever been captured this way. JWST got its first in 2022 — a gas giant called HIP 65426 b, roughly seven times Jupiter's mass, 355 light-years out. K2-18b, above, has never been photographed like this; its atmospheric signal came from an entirely different method — starlight filtering through its atmosphere during a transit.
