A new way to detect alien life: not which molecules, but how they're arranged
A study published in Nature Astronomy by UC Riverside researchers found that living systems produce a distinctive statistical "order" among molecules — amino acids turn out more diverse and evenly distributed when made by life, while fatty acids show the opposite pattern. Applied to Mars rover data or a future Europa sample, this could give scientists a second, independent signal beyond just detecting a molecule's presence.
Mars · Disputed biosignature
A Perseverance rover sample contains chemistry NASA calls "the closest we've ever come" to a sign of ancient microbial life — but the proof may be stuck on Mars. A separate 2026 study added more weight: complex organic carbon found at the nearby Bright Angel outcrop, the most robust such detection yet in Jezero Crater. China's Tianwen-3 mission now aims to launch in 2028 and return its own Mars samples by 2031 — potentially years ahead of NASA and ESA's own delayed sample-return effort. Meanwhile, across the planet in Gale Crater, Curiosity just passed 5,000 Martian days on the surface — still hunting for its own evidence of a habitable past.
Europa · En route
Europa Clipper is already flying toward Jupiter's icy moon to find out if the vast ocean beneath its shell could actually support life. Modeling suggests that ocean alone may hold over twice the water in every ocean on Earth combined — Clipper's magnetometer is precise enough to help confirm it.
Titan · Pre-launch
Dragonfly, a nuclear-powered rotorcraft, will fly between dozens of sites on Titan hunting for the chemical building blocks of life. In September 2026, the IAU officially named its landing zone — Ahmakiq Undae, a 500-mile dune field bordering Selk Crater, where a past impact may have created a long-lived pool of liquid water.
