Rwanda — Country guide

Rwanda, the land of a thousand hills

Mountain gorillas on the Virunga volcanoes, chimpanzees in Nyungwe's ancient rainforest, the Big Five in Akagera and the long shore of Lake Kivu, all within a day's drive of Kigali.

Rwanda is small enough that its four national parks and its great lake fit into a single trip. Most visitors come for the gorillas, then add chimpanzees in Nyungwe, a game drive in Akagera or a few slow days on Lake Kivu, starting and ending in Kigali.

Where to go

Mountain gorillas

Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda's corner of the Virunga volcanoes and the country's best-known park. Twelve habituated gorilla families live on its bamboo-covered slopes, and treks start each morning from the Kinigi headquarters. Golden monkeys, Dian Fossey's tomb and volcano hikes fill extra days.

Gorilla permit $1,500 · about 2–3 hours' drive from Kigali

Chimpanzees and rainforest

Nyungwe National Park

The largest block of natural forest in the region and, since 2023, Rwanda's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 101,900 hectares hold more than a dozen primate species, including chimpanzees, and 322 bird species, with a canopy walkway suspended high above the trees.

Managed by African Parks with the Rwanda Development Board

Big Five savannah

Akagera National Park

Rwanda's savannah park, on the eastern border: plains, woodland, wetland and a dozen lakes. Lions and rhinos have been reintroduced alongside elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra, and a boat trip on Lake Ihema brings you close to hippos and crocodiles.

Entry $100 a day for international adults · boat trip $35, night drive $40

Chimpanzees off the beaten path

Gishwati-Mukura National Park

Rwanda's newest national park, formalised in 2015 and open to visitors since 2019. Two forest fragments on the Congo–Nile ridge shelter a group of about 20 chimpanzees, along with golden monkeys, birds and waterfalls.

34 km², Rwanda's smallest national park

Lakeshore and trails

Lake Kivu

Rwanda's largest lake, 2,700 km², along the western border. Rubavu sits about an hour's drive from Volcanoes, Karongi is a popular beach town halfway down, and the 227 km Congo Nile Trail follows the shore for hiking and mountain biking.

A natural place to rest after a trek

The capital

Kigali

Where almost every trip begins and ends: a clean, hilly city with lively markets, art galleries and good restaurants. Many visitors start at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the place to begin understanding the country's recent history.

When to go

Rwanda sits just south of the Equator and is mild all year; its altitude keeps the mountain parks cool. Every park is open in every month. What changes is the rain.

Drier seasons

  • June to September and December to February are the main drier periods.
  • Forest parks (Volcanoes, Nyungwe, Gishwati-Mukura): firmer trails for gorilla and chimpanzee treks.
  • Akagera: thinner grass and fewer water sources make animals easier to find.
  • Kwita Izina, the gorilla-naming celebration, is held each September.

Wetter months

  • March to May and October to November bring more rain and muddier trails.
  • In return: greener hills, fewer visitors and excellent birdwatching.
  • Gorilla permit discounts for some visitors, when offered, apply outside June to October. See our Volcanoes guide.

What to pack

Most Rwanda trips combine cool mountain forests with warm savannah and lakeshore, so pack for both.

Waterproof hiking boots

For gorilla and chimpanzee treks in Volcanoes, Nyungwe and Gishwati-Mukura, where trails are steep and often muddy.
