Every lodge on this hillside is shaped like a nest, not a building — round, low, and thatched, so the ridge reads as forest first and architecture second, even from the next slope over.
Woven bamboo balconies, reed-thatched roofs, stone footpaths cut straight into the slope — the whole camp is designed to sit under the tree line rather than above it, so the volcanoes stay the view, not the buildings.
Thirteen rooms in Musanze, about 15 minutes from the park headquarters at Kinigi where treks begin — close enough that an early trek-day briefing doesn't mean an early alarm from Kigali. Full board, a pool and sauna for the return from the forest, and a local team who handle official gorilla permit timing alongside your stay.
Gorilla permits are limited by design — one habituated group, one small group of visitors, one hour with them once you're found. The trek itself can run from 30 minutes to several hours through bamboo forest, depending on where the family has moved.

Gorillas are the reason most people come, but the Virunga slopes hold enough for a second or third day.
An endangered monkey found mainly in the bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes. Two groups can be tracked, one on the slopes of Mount Karisimbi, with treks leaving the Kinigi headquarters once a day. It is an easier walk than a gorilla trek.

Guided hikes climb several of the park's volcanoes: Bisoke, with a crater lake at its summit, is the most popular day hike, while Karisimbi, the highest of the Virungas, is usually done over two days. Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo are also offered.

Lava-tube caves inside the park boundary, and Buhanga, an ancient forest grove tied to local folklore. Both are easy additions on a rest day, alongside cycling, canoeing and village visits around Kinigi.

Three things to sort out before you land in Kinigi.
A permit costs $1,500 per person for international visitors. Only 96 are issued each day, so book months ahead for June to September and December to February. RDB's promotional rates ($200 for Rwandan and East African citizens, $500 for other Africans and African residents) run until the end of 2026 but do not apply from June to October.
Waterproof boots, gaiters, and gardening gloves for stinging nettles matter more here than anything else on your packing list.
