First commercial flight pushed to February 2027

On its August 12, 2026 earnings call, Virgin Galactic confirmed the new Delta-class SpaceShip's commercial debut has slipped from Q4 2026 to February 2027 — attributed to avionics and systems installation tasks taking longer than planned, not one specific failure. Around 650 existing ticket holders are being given approximate flight windows now.

How the flight actually works

The air-launch system is what separates Virgin Galactic from the other two operators entirely.

The carrier

Carried by VMS Eve

A twin-fuselage carrier aircraft lifts SpaceShipTwo to roughly 15km before release — no ground launch pad involved.

The rocket burn

A short, powerful climb

After release, SpaceShipTwo fires its own rocket motor for about a minute, climbing steeply to apogee.

Weightlessness

A few minutes at the top

Passengers experience roughly 3-4 minutes of weightlessness at apogee before the craft begins its glide back to Earth.
