Lady Liberty was never meant to stay penny-bright. Her sea-green patina is a chemical reaction two centuries in the making — a French gift, an American harbor, and a torch that's been redesigned more than once.
A gift from France in 1886, the statue was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an iron skeleton engineered by Gustave Eiffel — the same structural mind behind the Paris tower, built a few years later.
The statue's copper sheeting is only 2.4mm thick — thin enough to flex slightly in strong wind, by design. Its original penny-bright color oxidized to the sea-green patina visitors know today over roughly 30 years.
Eiffel's internal iron frame lets the statue's arm sway up to 3 inches and the torch up to 6 inches in high wind — flexibility that keeps the copper skin from cracking, the same engineering logic later used in skyscrapers.
