Travelling in Spain

Gaudí's Barcelona, the museums of Madrid, the Alhambra and the towns of Andalusia, the islands and the Basque coast.

Spain welcomed about 94 million international visitors in 2024, second only to France. High-speed trains connect Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Málaga, so you can see two or three regions in one trip. Two things are new in 2026: Barcelona's tourist tax has doubled, and non-EU travellers have their fingerprints taken at the border.

When to go

You can visit Spain at any time of year. The summer heat in the south is the main thing to plan around.

Spring and autumn

  • March to May and September to November are the best months for cities and Andalusia, with warm days and lighter crowds.
  • Holy Week before Easter brings processions to Seville and other Andalusian cities; book rooms early.
  • Valencia's Las Fallas festival fills the city in mid-March.

Summer and winter

  • July and August are very hot in Seville, Córdoba and Madrid; the north coast and the islands are more comfortable.
  • The beaches and islands are busiest and most expensive in summer.
  • Winter is mild in the south and warm in the Canaries, and the cities are quieter.

What to pack

Pack for sun and long days on foot, with something warmer for the north and the mountains.
