Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631. Over 20,000 artisans worked on it for more than two decades — the result is one of the most precisely symmetrical buildings ever constructed.
