The Inca built it on a ridge between two peaks, high above the Urubamba river. It is one of the most visited ruins in the world, so entry is capped each day, visitors follow set routes and tickets often sell out.
Most visitors spend only a few hours at Machu Picchu, so it helps to plan ahead. Choose your route and entry time early, and if you can, stay a night in Aguas Calientes so you can go up before the day trains arrive.
Peru is testing new ticket rules
Since 22 September 2026, Peru's Culture Ministry has been testing new rules: you have 15 minutes to pay, the ticket is issued in your name, and entry tickets can only be bought by the visitor, on the ministry's own platforms or through agencies registered in Cusco. Prices have not changed. The trial was set to run for about 30 days, so check the official site before you book.
Prices and rules checked October 2026 from Peru's Culture Ministry figures, as reported by The Rio Times (5 Oct 2026), and Andina, Peru's state news agency. Always confirm on tuboleto.cultura.pe before paying.
Visitors can no longer walk around freely. Each ticket is for one circuit, a set one-way route through the site, grouped as panoramic, classic or royalty routes, and comes with an entry time. The climbs up Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain are add-on routes with their own small quotas, and they sell out first.
There is no road from Cusco to the site. Trains run from the Cusco area and from Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley down to Aguas Calientes, also called Machupicchu Pueblo, the town below the ruins. From there, buses climb the switchback road to the entrance, or you can walk up the steep stone steps.
The steep peak in the classic photo, climbed on narrow Inca stairs. It needs its own ticket and suits visitors with a head for heights.

Ollantaytambo's Inca fortress and village sit on the rail line, an easy stop on the way to or from Machu Picchu.
Three ways to visit, depending on your time and fitness.
Take an early train, the bus up, spend a few hours on your circuit and catch the train back. It is a long day, so book a morning entry time.
